Midsummer's Eve Walk and picnic - 23rd June 2010

We are holding our traditional Mid-Summer Nordic Walk in the evening on Wednesday 23rd June 2010.  Meeting at 18:30 at Pembroke Lodge Car Park in Richmond Park and Nordic walking towards the Ballet School and back to have a picnic on the grass opposite the car park.

This has been a great success in past years and Charlotte, Elin and I are keen to keep up the tradition by inviting others to join us.  It's good fun and great chance to meet lots of Nordic walkers, leaders and instructors.  Please bring your own Nordic Walking poles if you have them or let me know in advance if you need to borrow a pair as I only have a limited supply.
The celebration of Midsummer's Eve was from ancient times linked to the summer solstice. In Sweden, Mid-summer celebration originates from the time before Christianity.
The solstice itself has remained a special moment of the annual cycle of the year since Neolithic times. The concentration of the observance is not on the day as we reckon it, commencing at midnight or at dawn, but the pre-Christian beginning of the day, which falls on the previous eve. In Sweden, Finland and Estonia, Midsummer's Eve is considered the greatest festival of the year.
